About:
The Department of Medical Microbiology was established in 2011/2012 Academic year at Koya University. Medical microbiology is the study of the ways in which microbes, including bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses, affect our health and this is the major focus of the BSc Medical Microbiology programme. However, a broader knowledge of microbiology and the biosciences in general is essential for a full understanding of medical microbiology.

The Department provides training for health care professionals in the field of microbiological pathology, medical science and medical technology. Graduates are pathologists, medical scientists, medical technologists and laboratory technicians. It also provides laboratory service for medical microbiology.

Our Mission is to develop new approaches for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases and immunologic disorders. Department programs are integral to the School's new Initiative on Infectious Diseases.

The department's instructional program is one of the most diverse and active at the University of Koya School of Science and Health. The Department serves the teaching mission of the University by educating medical and graduate students in immunology, bacteriology, virology, and host-pathogen interactions. It fosters critical thinking and problem solving skills and provides opportunities for students to excel in the laboratory and to become life-long learners.

The department of Medical Microbiology strongly believes that microbiological research will play a leading role in solving Uganda’s medical ailments. Research in our department is integrated, spanning from basic research, applied to operation/clinical research. We believe in this integration since basic research provides a foundation for applied and operational research. Undergraduate from a wide range of the university’s programs are actively involved in our research programs. Upon finishing, the graduates pursue careers in research or health care or the academia. The department has Research projects supported by the university.

Vision:
What are the visions for the department? Each head of the department need to liaise with its deanery and make sure to put forward logical, practical, feasible and reachable vision in line with the common university visions. This important as students as well as parents and student, policy makers and scan the page to understand where this program is heading. Education and well as research has a good value. Welfare of the student engage with program and their future prospects.

Our Mission is to inspires, equips and mobilizes students to take action that changes the world. This can be achieved by leading, certified and transparent administration in the tasks application down to a culture of excellence.
