Description

Welcome to the Department of Clinical Psychology (DCLP) website where you will find information about clinical psychology program at Koya University in Kurdistan Region of Iraq and about how to apply.

Clinical psychology is an integration of the science, theory and clinical knowledge for the purpose of understanding, preventing, and relieving psychologically-based distress or dysfunction and to promote subjective and behavioral well-being and personal development. 

Clinical psychologists aim to reduce psychological distress and enhance and promote psychological well-being.

They work with people with mental or physical health problems which might include:
  • anxiety and depression
  • serious and enduring mental illness
  • adjustment to physical illness
  • neurological disorders
  • addictive behaviours
  • childhood behaviour disorders
  • personal and family relationships.
They often work with people throughout their lives and with people who have learning disabilities.

The Department of Clinical Psychology (DCLP) was established in 2010/2011. The DCLP came to birth in a joint venture the help of international organization such as Heartland Alliance. A two year Master program was introduced in a joint effort by Koya University and Heartland Alliance. Ten students graduated with Masters Degrees in Clinical Psychology who today provide wide range of services of various sectors in Kurdistan region. Nevertheless, the First batch of undergraduates were graduated in 2013-2014. The total number of students for the academic year 2014-2015 is 121 (28 in the 4th year, 40 in 3rd year, 32 in 2nd year, and 21 in 1st year). 

Department’s Vision

Department of Clinical Psychology endeavors to become an accredited leading department to be able to provide a world class Clinical Psychology education where people are constantly affected by dramatic changes in their life. The DCLP aim to educate the next generation of Clinical psychologists in the region to provide quality services to their communities. DCLP also strive to set the standard for Excellence in Clinical Psychology Training through the integration of clinical practice, research & teaching.

Department’s Mission

Department’s mission is Enhancing the training of clinical psychology graduate students by providing:
  • Evidence-based psychological assessment and treatment services for the Kurdistan and area community
  • Teaching and clinical supervision in state-of-the-art evidence-based therapeutic modalities
  • Research on the causes, assessment, and treatment of psychological disorders
The DCLP is committed to expand the understanding of human behaviour and its development and contribute to optimize mental health and well-being through rigorous and state of the art research. This forms the basis for its academic and professional training programs which strive to provide a rich experience to its students preparing them to excel in their careers and their contribution to society.

Department’s Objectives


To achieve its mission, Department of Clinical Psychology strives to achieve these objectives:
  1. Preparing highly qualified graduates who are capable of providing quality mental health services in clinical and non-clinical settings. 
  2. Conducting scientific research in clinical psychology field to promote knowledge and practice. 
  3. Offering mental health services to university community through the Counseling and Psychotherapy Center and to the public. 
  4. Promoting professional development of the academic staff in the department with regard to teaching and clinical skills.
  5. Create bridges for international collaboration and joint venture with academic institute with mutual interest
  6. Promote the path to become licensed clinical psychologist in Kurdistan region
Department Learning Outcomes
  1. Students will demonstrate a proficiency in understanding psychological concepts. 
  2. Students will have successful entry into graduate programs and careers. 
  3. Students will have opportunities for growth through hands-on experiences in the applied psychology fields. 
  4. Courses in the Psychology curriculum meet students’ needs concerning their career objectives. 
  5. Students will be satisfied with the quality of their education and the person-centered approach of the Psychology faculty. 
  6. Each faculty member will engage in professional development activities designed to enhance teaching effectiveness.
Future job prospects

Clinical psychologists tend to work with one particular client group, such as children or people with learning disabilities. They also often work in a particular setting, for example a hospital or through social services. However, clinical psychologists work largely in health and social care settings, including:
  • hospitals
  • health centres
  • community mental health teams
  • child and adolescent mental health services
  • social services.
  • They will often work alongside other professionals, including doctors, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and physiotherapists.
To assess a client, a clinical psychologist may undertake a clinical assessment, using a variety of methods including, psychometric tests, interviews and direct observation of behaviour. Assessment may lead to therapy, counselling or advice.

Due to their high level of research skills, clinical psychologists undertake the role of scientist-practitioner, as an innovator and applied researcher, adding to the evidence base of practice in a variety of health care settings.

Clinical psychologists may undertake further training to work as a high intensity therapist as part of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service.

More experienced clinical psychologists are often called on to write legal reports and act as expert witnesses. They keep detailed paperwork about clients in order to monitor the progress of the clients' treatments.

Duration

The duration of study at DCLP is 4 Academic years full-time study. Normally an academic year starts in Mid Sept to Mid-June of the next year. 

Language

The language of education at the DCLP is English language for all courses, except the Kurdish Studies course where the language of study is the Kurdish language.
